Anyone who gets a subscription to Reader's Digest should check out their March edition. I'm still scratching my head over it.
Near the end, in the "Eat Me!" or "Eat This!" section (something like that) a reader wrote in about being bored with winter veggies. The nutrition/recipe guru wrote about cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. Mentioned how they were great cancer fighters.
Then went on to recommend frying the cabbage in bacon fat to make it taste good!
The cancer won't get a chance to eat you up. Your blocked arteries will choke the life out of you first!!
I'm going to extend the time for the last round of new American Midol entries for one more day---midnight on Thursday. I've been a bad bad host and was too busy to pimp it today.
Don't forget to scroll down and vote for your favorite bad poem for this week!

That's like the ladies magazines that say "Lose 35 pounds This Week!" and have a picture of a 7-layer caramel cake on the cover.
Ahhh, but you can fry that cabbage in a tablespoon of olive oil and add a few tablespoons of chicken broth and it's mighty fine eatin too!
Best way to eat cabbage is fresh from the garden with a little bit of salt, just like Grandma did. And you don't lose every bit of nutritional value that way, like you do by frying it. (Ugh! I know you're not s'posed to knock something until you've tried it, but I'm a'knockin'.)
Wait...what?
I am reading the words, but just not understanding...
Cabbage sauteed in bacon fat... UGH! why not top this dish with some Velveeta chunks just before serving?
bleh
yesterday I ate some raw purple cabbage all by itself, as a snack. It was fine. I usually eat apples for snacks but ran out.
If it ain't one thing, it's another. God it's depressing. I think I'll have a cigarette to calm my nerves
You know what IS good??
my Baja Fish Taco's!!
Ahhh haaaa !!!! I am teasing your about your comment on my blog.
Alright... on a serious note,
I've had cabbage/wide egg noodlies/
and polska kilbasa....that was real good! ... sounds nasty ...
but it's good. I'm bad though and pour way too much salt on top.
Toodles!
Ah, nice. The "guru" absolutely must have been from the South. Everybody there cooks their veggies with bacon. It's a rule.
By the way, the South has the worst rate of stroke and heart disease in the country. Coincidence? Absolutely not.
Hi Attila,
“Eat Me” sounds like something from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. Picture the “average Joe” whose IQ is about that of a squid, thumbing through “Reader’s Digest” and coming upon the suggestion of frying cabbage in bacon fat, which claims be a good cancer fighter. Light up another cigarette and throw on some more lard, Mama!
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Snort.
Really? Reader's Digest suggested that?
Oh my. How the mighty have falled.
I just remember growing up, RD was like the guide to everything nice and courageous stories and health thingies.
Cabbage in bacon fat?
Well, I don't think they meant for you to deep fry it in bacon fat, just saute it in a couple of teaspoons. But still, Brenda's right, olive oil and chicken stock is just as good.
And no, we Southerners don't fry everything in bacon fat. Sometimes we use peanut oil. mmm...we had fried okra just last night. Yum.
With the weight loss over the past couple of years, my father and his partner have taken to asking my wife and I about how we've done it, and what tips we could impart etc.
Of course, what we have said is that you need to eat plenty of fruit and vegetable.
Last time we went to visit and stayed to dinner the vegetable we all cooked in loads of butter and cream - "It's the only way I can get him to eat them" said my father's partner...
Don't talk to me about food at the moment, Chubbs is doing the Atkins. His breath, dear Lord, his BREATH!
You only live once--try everything. Hell, I even had one of those BK Quad Stackers. You'll have to search my blog for the link. I haven't had one since (because I'd like to see my kids through high school), but damn was it tasty!
I thought we weren't supposed to eat bacon because it's loaded with nitrates which are carcinogens. (I'm relying on my memory here, so I could be meandering alone out in left field on this one, but still...) So now, to avoid cancer we're supposed to eat "good" veggies to ward off the big "C", and then we fry them in a carcinogenic product. Right. I'm getting way too old for this shit.
