Big Smooches

You know, we hear so much about the crappy things our youth are getting into today, and not nearly enough about the good things.

Sh*tty behavior sells papers. But we knew that.

So while yes, there is some nasty stuff in this story, there's also some fabulous good.

I want to extend cookies galore to a couple of high school students at Central Kings Rural High School in Cambridge, Nova Scotia.

Recently, on the first day of school, a new 9th grade student was attacked by a group of older students, who mocked him for wearing a pink shirt, called him a homosexual (yeah, they probably called him something worse, but I'm going with the news story) and threatened to beat him up.

Seniors Travis Price and David Shepherd decided to take action.

"It’s my last year. I’ve stood around too long and I wanted to do something," said David.

The two bought 75 pink tank tops, pink material for head and wristbands, and contacted every student they could on the internet. They saved a shirt especially for the new student who had been bullied.

They figure that at least half of the student body of 830 came to school wearing pink, much to the detriment of the bullies.

Way to go, guys!

There are so many good things being accomplished by the youth of today - but you're right, it's generally the "bad" that makes the headlines.
Kudos to those boys for their maturity and action.

Now that's news that deserves to be on the Front pages of newspapers and magazines everywhere! Nothing is more painful and damaging to a kid than other kids who bully them. Way to step up and put the bullies in their places!

i think it's awesome on what these two guys did. i remember bullies (not on me thankfully) and the fear they incited in the school body. now if we can pass this courage to other schools...

Hi Attila,
Unfortunately it’s most often the “bad” or bizarre stories that we read and hear about these days. Twelve years ago a friend of mine’s 15 year old son committed suicide because he could no longer handle the taunting from his classmates brought on by his sexual proclivities. The teachers and school administrators turned a deaf ear to the torment this young man was forced to endure on a day to day basis, and despite having a loving and accepting home environment, his shame became intolerable and he opted out by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s too bad these students at Central Kings Rural High School in Cambridge, Nova Scotia weren’t around for him.

I LOVE this story. Thank you for telling me about it. This is the nicest thing I have heard about in a long, long time. There is hope, there really is. And your right, the press rarely tells us about the good stuff.

Good for them! If more of us would do little things like that, I'm pretty sure the world would be a better place!

Wow. Those bullies would have HATED the 80s. Lots of guys wore pink. Even I did.
